The day that your baby is born is one of the happiest days of your life. The day that your baby goes into cardiac arrest is one of the most terrifying.
Ten years ago, we found ourselves living that very nightmare. You see, unbeknownst to anyone, our daughter, Lauren, was born with a very rare heart defect.
At 5 months old, we felt something wasn’t quite right with her. We drove her to BC Children’s Hospital and it wasn’t a moment too soon. Within an hour of our arrival, Lauren’s heart stopped completely.
That was the beginning of Lauren’s heart journey. With 6 cardiac resuscitations, 2 open heart surgeries, 3 days on life support, 7 days on a breathing machine, 1 pacemaker surgery and 74 days spent in the hospital, the importance of the hospital in her life can’t be understated.
This year we celebrate the 10th anniversary of that horrible day. Today, Lauren is a kind, vibrant girl who loves to laugh, dance, ski and swim. Without the amazing care of BC Children’s Hospital, none of this would be possible. And now we need to give back to them!
